NSE IPO: Over 2 Crore Shares Reduced. Why?

For thousands of retail investors, the NSE IPO was not just another market offering. It was an opportunity they had been saving for.
Now, that opportunity has suddenly become smaller.
The proposed issue, earlier expected to mobilise around 30,000 crore, has reportedly been reduced to roughly 21,500 to 22,500 crore. More significantly, the number of shares on offer has fallen from nearly 14.9 crore to 12.64 crore, leaving more than 2 crore fewer shares available.
That is a significant change for those who had planned their savings around the earlier issue size. The question is no longer simply how much NSE intends to raise, but what prompted such a substantial reduction in the offering.
The indicative price band remains at 1,700 to 1,785, making the reduction even more noteworthy. If the issue is expected to attract strong demand, why scale it down? If there are regulatory, valuation or strategic considerations behind the decision, greater clarity would help explain the move.
The timing adds another dimension.
The NSE IPO is expected to be followed by the much-awaited Reliance Jio IPO, which could seek to raise more than 35,000 crore. With two potentially massive issues approaching the market, India’s primary market is heading towards an unusually significant phase of capital mobilisation.
NSE may still command enormous demand. But the reduction has changed the conversation.
After months of anticipation and financial preparation, one straightforward question remains: Why?
