About the book
Reaching the world’s fifth-largest economy took independent India a long and uneven struggle. आर्थिक सफ़रनामा sets out that journey in five parts, in language written for the general reader rather than for the economist.
The first part gathers the episodes that shaped the last seventy-five years — the Green Revolution, the founding of LIC, cricket as an economy of its own, and the LPG reforms of 1991.
The second turns to the problems that have never gone away, thirteen of them taken one at a time: unemployment, poverty, inflation, the debt levels of the states and the centre, the financial position of women, pensions, infrastructure, MGNREGA and population.
The third asks what the economy is doing about them, across seven chapters on employment, GST, self-reliance, the stock market, digital currency, the gig economy and the G-20.
The fourth reads India against the world — its dependence on imports, its foreign exchange reserves, the pressure of a strong dollar, crude oil, the war in Ukraine, and the economies of Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The last part is the one the reviewers kept returning to. It is built from interviews: a shopkeeper, a farmer, a vegetable seller, a milk seller, a taxi driver, a roadside food vendor, a property dealer, an LIC agent, a stockbroker, and teachers from both government and private schools — each asked what the economy actually looks like from where they stand.
